Art For Your Backyard

Art For Your Backyard

When people think of art, people generally think of a painting hung over their mantle or the sculpture sitting on their coffee table. Whatever you think of when you hear the word art, your first most likely isn’t of someone’s backyard. There are so many ways to add an artistic touch to your landscape.

One of the most obvious ways to add art to your backyard is with beautifully painted terra cotta pots. You can purchase these ready-made pots in your local hardware store. When you get the pots home, start thinking of what sort of design you would like to paint your pots. For instance, you may paint your pots with stripes or polka dots. Feel free to paint your pots with any colors of gloss glazes that you choose. Once you are done painting, the pots need to be fired in a kiln to finish them up. Now you have hand-painted pots that will be sure to add vibrant color to any landscape.

Another idea for backyard art is a bird bath. This is a lovely feature that will attract many birds to your yard. The easy way to add this to your yard is simply to go out and buy one. But if you want to be a little more hands-on in the creation of your bird bath, then you can make one yourself. One method to making your bird bath is to start with air dry clays. All you have to do is sculpt the exact birdbath design that you want out of the clay. Of course, this is much more difficult than it sounds, but if you do make a mistake, it is easy to start over since you are working with clay. With air-dried clay, all you need to do is wait for your sculpture to dry. There is no need to fire the clay; the clay will harden on its own. When the clay is dry, simply apply a coat of varnish to ensure that the bird bath is waterproof, and then get ready to enjoy watching the birds play in the water.

A further example of adding art to your backyard is stepping stones. You could decide to purchase pre-made stepping stones at the hardware store and finish them up like you would the flower pots. If you are feeling more creative, you could use slab rollers to mold your clay into the desired thickness you desire. Stepping stones are just like a blank canvas waiting for you to paint your masterpiece on them. Another great idea for the stones is to have your children each paint their own. This way, when your children have already grown and you stroll through your garden, you will be reminded of how much fun you all had creating the stepping stones together. Whatever art you do decide to add to your backyard is sure to bring many delightful memories to your family for years to come.
